The setup

The restored Abendstern runs from Hamburg to Venice. Guest of honor Margot Thalberg designed the old train’s chandelier; her exhibition opens on Murano tomorrow. But at 10:40 p.m., her place in the salon car is empty: Thalberg is dead.

You’re writing about the train’s first winter run for a rail magazine and have been taking notes since Hamburg. Maggiore Zanetti of the Carabinieri art squad only boarded at the Brenner Pass and needs your notebook. Six people quarreled with Thalberg today. You must piece her day together before everyone gets off in Venice.

One day in eight chapters

  1. 9:30 a.m. Just Like 1985
  2. 11:15 a.m. The Whistling Car
  3. 1:00 p.m. First Snow
  4. 3:15 p.m. The First Mountains
  5. 5:30 p.m. Twenty Minutes
  6. 7:30 p.m. Bubbly Before the Brenner
  7. 9:00 p.m. Past the Brenner
  8. 10:15 p.m. One Minute in the Snow

How the Night Train plays

The first four chapters have 6×6 sudoku and 6×6 floor plans. From chapter 5, things get bigger: classic 9×9 sudoku and floor plans of 7×7 squares.

The catalog rates the story 3 out of 5 magnifying glasses. It’s a good fit once you’ve solved a case and want more.
